How a Sports Bet from 1935 Started a Tradition

Imagine it’s 1935, there’s only a few schools that are welcoming of black players in collegiate football. The Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Gophers have had a deep on-going rivalry for the last 40+ years. In 1934, when the two teams played, there was a controversy over the treatment of a black Iowa star running back, Ozzie Simmons. It was widely agreed that Simmons was targeted with many late hits and pile-ups that caused him to leave the game due to injury numerous times.

Going into the game, both teams are undefeated and tensions high over last year’s unfair play style. The Iowa governor, Clyde Herring decided to take matters into his own hands and issued a statement:

“If the officials stand for any rough tactics like Minnesota used last year, I’m sure the crowd won’t.”

Upon hearing of the statement, Minnesota governor, Floyd Olson, issued a telegram to the Iowa governor ensuring there would be fair play in the upcoming game, and further stated:

“If you seriously think Iowa has any chance to win, I will bet you a Minnesota prize hog against an Iowa prize hog that Minnesota wins today. The loser must deliver the hog in person to the winner. Accept my bet thru a reporter. You are getting odds because Minnesota raises better hogs than Iowa. My best personal regards and condolences.”

Iowa leads the series 43–42–2 with Iowa winning the last 7 games

The bet was accepted and news traveled quickly raising the publicity of the game. Minnesota and Iowa battled out a fair game and in the end Minnesota won 14–7. In a turn of events in the 1935 game, Minnesota players continued to compliment Ozzie Simmons on his play and Ozzie praised the Gopher’s clean, hard-fought victory.

Afterwards, the Iowa Governor made true on his bet and personally delivered a prized Iowa hog from Rosedale farms outside of Fort Dodge, IA to the governor’s (carpeted) office at the Minnesota State Capitol. They named the hog Floyd of Rosedale after Minnesota governor Floyd Olson. Today, the hog is represented by a bronze statue and the traveling trophy is given to the winner of the Hawkeyes/Gophers game every year.
